How to Manage Your Natural Hair in Less Than Six Steps

How to Manage Your Natural Hair in Less Than Six Steps

It’s all about the hydration and moisture. Dryness is probably the major cause of breakage, so maintaining ample hydration is key. After shampooing with a moisturizing shampoo, using the right hydrating conditioner is important.

The conditioner should ideally be chemical-free because chemicals in the hair are not only unnecessary, they will dry your hair out and cause damage to your strands that you don’t need.

You should leave your conditioner in your hair with a plastic cap covering for at least 15 minutes for the best results. When you’re ready to rinse your hair out, use lukewarm to cold water. NEVER hot water. The hot water will only strip the moisture right back out of your hair.

After shampooing and conditioning, it’s imperative to use an oil that is effective in damage repair, adding shine, and sealing in moisture. The right oil would be a blend of essential oils with Omega 3’s, 6’s, and 9’s. Something like the Growth Accelerator Potion has the perfect blend of essential oils infused with growth-inducing herbs that will improve the condition of your hair after the first use.

Whatever oil you choose should be applied to scalp and hair while it’s still damp for maximum absorbency. Once the oil has been applied to damp hair and massaged in, it would be a good time to decide on your styling options.

Styling options for natural hair are extensive, so have fun with it. However, avoid heat as much as possible. Heat is very drying to the hair and can easily erase all the hydration you would have added using the steps above. If you must use heat, opt for a low blow dry setting or sit under a hair dryer on medium-low.

For quick on-the-go styling, you may decide to blow dry. If so, you can apply a curl defining cream like Curl Creme of the Crop to damp hair, hang your head upside down, and scrunch your hair with your fingers to enhance your natural curl pattern as it dries. Hair should be damp and NOT wet. If your hair is dripping wet, not only will it take longer to dry, the curls can appear limp and will not have as much volume.

If you have a bit more time, you can choose to use a twisting butter on your damp hair to twist your hair in 4–6 section (depending on length and texture). Afterwards, you can sit under a hooded dryer on low and read a good book or scroll through your favorite social media pages. Either way, use a twisting butter that is incredibly moisturizing to avoid any damage from the dryer’s heat. A good product for this option would be Blooming Butter. Once you unravel the twists after drying has been completed, your twist-out will look phenomenal.

And in a perfect world, styling without heat should be strongly considered. Using the shampooing, conditioning, and curl cream or twisting butter steps above, we can always let our hair fully air dry and achieve the same, if not better, results. There’s something to be said for the gradual air dry method that produces amazing textured results on natural hair. As long as the proper plant-based products for natural hair are used, maintaining natural hair can be much simpler than we once believed to be true.

It’s important to note that we do not need to wash our hair too often if we are using chemical-free products. Giving our hair the time to allow the proper nutrients to be absorbed is essential for obtaining and maintaining healthy natural hair. Even if you feel the need to style your hair daily, washing and conditioning only need to be done once every two weeks if you are using the best natural hair products.
